EDITD est une start-up qui offre des solutions pour le commerce de détail dans l’industrie de la mode et qui aide les entreprises à choisir les bons produits, au bon prix, au bon moment. 

Nous avons été très chaleureusement accueillis par Geoff Watts, cofondateur de l’entreprise, ainsi que par 4 membres de son équipe. La rencontre a été très dynamique : nous avons eu droit à une présentation du produit ainsi qu’à un portrait détaillé de la gestion de l’entreprise. Par la suite, les membre de son équipe, issus du domaine de la mode, des affaires et de l’ingénierie, nous ont parlé de leur parcours et de leur rôle chez EDITD. 

Nous avons été surpris de voir à quel point ces personnes sont passionnées et de constater à quel point le sentiment d’appartenance est fort au sein de la compagnie. La distance hiérarchique est très faible dans l’entreprise, de sorte que les dirigeants semblent plutôt être des chefs d’équipe, et les employés peuvent profiter d’une grande flexibilité dans le choix de leurs tâches. Le fonctionnement de l’entreprise est basé sur des valeurs plutôt que sur des règles, et c’est ce qui distingue leur environnement de travail et motive les employés. 

La visite a été très inspirante pour toute l’équipe, car Geoff nous a présenté autant le côté entrepreneurial que le côté technique de l’entreprise. Il nous a motivé à nous dépasser pour atteindre nos objectifs les plus ardus. Merci, EDITD !

EDITD is a retail technology start-up offering solutions for sales companies in the fashion industry that helps companies view their competition and choose the right products at the right time and price.

We have been warmly greeted by Geoff Watts, co-founder of the company, as well as 4 team members. The meeting was very dynamic; we were given a detailed portrait of the product as well as the company's management strategy. Next, the team, coming from different backgrounds in sales, fashion, business and engineering, told us about their personal stories and their roles and integration within EDITD.

We have been impressed by their passion and to see how everyone felt the ownership of the product. The leaders act more like coaches than managers, bringing a horizontal hierarchy within the group, and this makes the employees feel like they belong. This also helps with motivation and productivity, seeing the great flexibility they are given when choosing their tasks. The company is value-based rather than rule-based, characteristic that we all admire and find motivating and appealing.

This visit has been really inspiring for all of us, including our non-software students, because Geoff and his team showed us both the entrepreneurial side of the business and the technical aspects. They motivated us to overcome all our difficulties to strive to become better and reach our most wanted objectives. Thanks a lot, EDITD!

En fin d’après-midi, nous sommes allés visiter la prestigieuse entreprise Foster + Partners dans leurs locaux situés au sud de Londres, sur les bords de la Tamise. 

Foster + Partners est une entreprise qui a été fondée par Norman Foster, le célèbre architecte britannique appelé dans le milieu "le père de l’architecture high-tech". À ses débuts, l’entreprise était un cabinet d’architectes, puis l’entreprise s'est développée afin d’intégrer des départements d’ingénierie liés au génie civil, au génie mécanique et  à l'informatique.

Nous fûmes accueillis par deux ingénieurs, Andy et Mattew. La visite commença par une présentation de nos intervenants. Mattew travaille depuis 3 ans pour le groupe et à réaliser ses études en ingénierie à Toronto. Ll nous a d’ailleurs montré son jonc, symbole de son appartenance à l’Ordre des ingénieurs du Canada. Andy travaille depuis 5 ans pour Foster + Partners et a réalisé ses études dans la prestigieuse université de Cambridge au Royaume-Uni.

 

Par la suite, nous avons visité les locaux de Foster + Partners, qui sont composés de 3 bâtiments principaux et de quelques immeubles en périphérie. Chacun des bâtiments principaux abritent des départements spécifiques : l’ingénierie, l’architecture et le design d’intérieur.

 

Nous sommes ensuite partis dans une salle de réunion située dans le bâtiment dédié à l’architecture où Andy et Mattew nous ont présenté l'avènement de quelques projets récents, depuis leurs débuts . La salle de réunion avait une impressionnante vue sur la Tamise et sur l’espace de travail ouvert où sont réalisés les premiers concepts architecturaux du groupe. Nous avons notamment pu observer quelques maquettes dont celle du 30th Saint Mary Axe aussi connu sous le nom de « Gherkin ». Durant cette présentation, nous avons aussi pu apprendre l’historique du groupe ainsi que les différentes activités du groupe qui mêlent ingénierie et architecture afin de réaliser la conception de projet de bâtiments et d’infrastructure.

Mattew nous a présenté le projet de l’aéroport de Tocumen au Panama. La difficulté de ce projet fut de prendre en compte les forts séismes qui peuvent survenir dans cette région. Andy nous a présenté les projets sur lesquels il a eu l’occasion de travailler comme l’aéroport de Mexico ou le Health Education Campus. Il nous expliqua l’importance de maîtriser le logiciel Revit afin de pouvoir modéliser ses idées et ses concepts.

 

La visite s'est terminée par une séance de questions par rapport au rôle des ingénieurs et au processus de réalisation de grand projets tels que ceux réalisés par le groupe.

In late afternoon, we visited the prestigious company Foster + Partners in their offices near the southern Thames shore in London.

Foster + Partners was founded by Norman Foster, famous British architect nicknamed "father of the high-tech architecture." When it began, the company was no more than an architecture cabinet, but then it grew to include structural, mechanical and construction engineering departments.

We were greeted by two engineers, Andy and Mattew. Our visit began with a short introduction from our two hosts. Mattew has been working for the group for the past 3 years and did his engineering studies at the University of Toronto. He proudly showed us his engineering ring, proving his belonging to our Canadian Engineering Order. Andy has been working at Foster + Partners for over 5 years and studied at the renowned University of Cambridge, in England.

We have then visited the office, composed of 3 main buildings and a couple connex nearby offices. The most important buildings hold specific departments; engineering, architecture and interior design. We then headed to a conference room, where Andy and Mattew briefly presented the project process of Foster + Partners, taking us from construction to concept. The room has an impressive view upon the river Thames and on the room where a lot of engineers, unimpressed by the late hours, worked peacefully on their architectural projects. We have been able to admire some scaled models of their undergoing and past projects, such as the 30th Saint-Mary Axe, also known as the "Gherkin."

During this presentation, we have learned a lot about the group's history as well as it's different activity spheres, mixing engineering and architecture to achieve large-scale architectural projects from their very beginning. The process starts with architectural contests and is neverending, considering the maintenance and revision tasks that engineers must undergo to ensure the life of these projects.

Mattew presented the Tocumen airport project in Panama. The main difficulty achieving this project was to take into account the risks of earthquakes.

 

Andy then presented some of his own projects, including Mexico's airport and the Health Education Campus. He told us how important it is to know software such as Revit to take concepts to modelling, and mentioned how useful programming and 3D algebra are to generate redundant structures.

The visit ended with us asking questions concerning the engineers' roles within the company and the processes used to start and complete large-scale projects.
